Tulip Tree Seeds: Tall Flowering Shade Tree, Fast Growing

I had no idea where these flowers came from... until one fell on my head. Thunk! A giant tulip tree had been looming overhead the whole time. Now, every time I see one, I can’t help but look up… just in case.

 

About:
The Tulip Tree also known as Yellow Poplar or Tulip Poplar is a majestic North American native with uniquely shaped leaves and green-yellow flowers that resemble open tulips. Loved by bees and admired by anyone who looks up, this tree grows tall, straight, and proud sometimes reaching over 100 feet in its lifetime. It’s a fast-growing, pollinator-friendly shade tree that adds grace to any large garden, homestead, or field edge. These seeds may take time and patience, but what they become is worth every minute.

Height at maturity: 70–100+ ft (My tree is currently around 50-60')
Lifespan: 200+ years (Wow!)
Zones: 4–9
Growth rate: Fast (2–3 ft/year in early stages)
Bloom: Late spring/early summer

How to Grow From Seed:
Tulip Tree seeds require cold stratification (mimic winter). 
Here’s how to give them their best chance:
Mix seeds with moist sand or peat
Place in a sealed container or bag
Refrigerate for 60–90 days
After stratification, plant ¼” deep in pots or directly outdoors
Keep moist until germination (can take 4–6 weeks post-chilling)
Transplant to final location when seedlings are 6–12 inches tall
